I’ve been making homemade ranch dressing for many, many years. It all started because my family eats ranch on (nearly) everything so we really use a lot of it! With just a few simple ingredients, you can make your own homemade ranch dressing and be ready to eat it in an hour or so.

There are a few different ways to make homemade ranch, but this is what I do. To start with, you need a dry ranch mix. Here’s what you’ll need . . .
Ranch Dressing Mix
- 5 Tablespoons dried minced onions
- 7 teaspoons parsley flakes
- 4 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Mix those together and store in an air-tight container. I just use a half pint jar.
Once you’ve got the mix done, it’s super simple to throw together a dip or dressing.
Ranch Dip
Mix 2 Tablespoons dry mix with 2 cups sour cream
Ranch Dressing
Mix 2 Tablespoons dry mix with 1 cup mayonnaise and 1 cup buttermilk OR sour cream. (I prefer to use buttermilk*)
*To make your own buttermilk, add 1 Tablespoon lemon juice OR apple cider vinegar in a 1 cup measuring cup. Fill the rest of the way with milk and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Boom. You’ve got buttermilk.
Isn’t that crazy simple? I usually make a quart (this recipe doubled) of ranch dressing on Sunday for the upcoming week. Sometimes I have to make more on Friday for the kids to have with their pizza. Like I said, we eat a ton of ranch dressing.
Making homemade ranch saves so much money, tastes way better, and has none of the yuck found in store-bought bottles.

We use a similar recipe that calls for dill. I don’t love dill, so I don’t always use it. But I do love being able to make up ranch anytime we are having salad, chicken nuggets, etc. And that there’s no soybean oil in it.
Yum! Thanks for the recipe. I have a soy allergy and have to make things like this from scratch.
hmm… never knew ranch dressing was made with buttermilk.
