As part of the TOS Crew we were given the opportunity to review the new handwriting curriculum from CursiveLogic, the CursiveLogic Workbook ($29.00).

Inspired by a 23-year old student with learning disabilities, CursiveLogic is paving the way for future writers by introducing a revolutionary concept for teaching cursive. The student, Luke, wanted nothing more than to sign his own name but had never been taught proper handwriting. Linda Shrewsbury, creator of CursiveLogic, was volunteering at a local literacy program when she met this young man. After some time spent trying to figure out how to teach Luke to write in cursive, Linda came up with this simple and intelligent program.

Instead of taking months and months, Linda’s technique allows for handwriting mastery in just four lessons.

CursiveLogic Handwriting Curriculum Review

This combined teacher’s manual and student workbook contains step-by-step instructions for teaching cursive the CursiveLogic way, along with student lessons, practice sheets, and three dry-erase pages. This handwriting curriculum is recommended for students ages 7 to adult.

How it works

The ease in learning from this handwriting curriculum is found in its 4-fold process of teaching.

1. Letters grouped by shape

Four basic shapes make up the entire alphabet. CursiveLogic teaches all of the similar letters in one lesson, greatly simplifying the learning process.

2. Letter strings

Rather than teaching letters individually, CursiveLogic teaches all of the letters that share a common shape in a connected string. This allows the letters to reinforce each other and means the students are writing cursively from the very beginning.

3. Color coding

Each letter string has a theme color that helps students remember the shape.

4. Catch phrases

CursiveLogic uses “verbal task analysis,” or saying an action verbally as it is performed manually to aid the development of muscle memory and to give students a mnemonic they can return to over and over.

How we used the workbook

Jules (6th grader) already knows cursive but could definitely do with some brushing up. I had her work in the workbook several times a week. I did notice an improvement in her writing and therefore would recommend CursiveLogic as a way of helping the young people of today NOT lose the fine art of handwriting.

Our bottom line

As far as handwriting curriculum goes, CursiveLogic is a winner. When asked what she thought of the program, Julia replied, “It was easy to follow and I got done quickly.”
