How I Keep My Home Smelling Fresh Everyday

Some people have bought into the clutter-free philosophy, while others have a garden that is their pride and joy. For me, it’s all about the scent of my house.

That’s right, I place a ridiculous amount of attention on how my home smells and it drives my family absolutely mad. This isn’t “home” in general as well; I have rules for every single room.

I’m not going to bore you with the details of how I like each room to smell, but instead, tell you some of the ways I like to do this:

  • I have fresh flowers on constant order
  • I stick dryer sheets to my trash can
  • I cook vanilla in the oven
  • I don’t just use dry shampoo for my hair
  • I diffuse essential oils

So, let’s go through some of these ideas. The first is relatively straightforward – although some people might call it excessive. Put simply, I’m constantly ordering fresh flowers. Avas Flowers is the brand of choice at the moment, mainly because I’ve read a lot of positive Avas Flowers experiences online. This is a brand I couldn’t recommend enough and for those of you looking for a bit of inspiration, there’s a really good Avas Flowers social media page over here.

In terms of what flowers I choose, this largely depends on my mood. There is a good list of nice smelling flowers over here, although of late I have been swaying towards orchids. Again, it varies by month though.

This next tip is a little hack I have devised for myself. As we know, the kitchen trash holds all sorts of smells that unfortunately leak into the main living space. To get around this, I line it with dryer sheets. The smells seem to be absorbed by the sheets, meaning that my kitchen area isn’t affected by any of those nasty odors whatsoever.

On the subject of hacks, I’m rather proud of this next one. I discovered this following something of a food emergency, where my whole kitchen was inundated with a fish smell after cooking it the night before. Seeing some vanilla in the cupboard, I cooked it for an hour in the oven. The result? The smell was gone, and the kitchen had a wonderful aroma. Since then, I’ve become almost obsessed with the practice, and try to do it whenever any guests arrive (regardless of if I’ve cooked fish or not!).

Next, it’s onto sweaty shoes. We all have them, and in some cases, the odor can dominate a room. Again, I stumbled upon this tip completely accidentally, after frantically trying to find something to get rid of the smell that a pair were emitting! Dry shampoo was the only thing I could think of but in short, I haven’t looked back. Not only does it smell wonderful (we all knew this), but it does seem to be a permanent solution when it comes to sweaty odors.

Finally, I’m not one of these people who have electric air fresheners plugged into every room of the house. Sure, they sounded amazing at first, but they are expensive. Instead, I just diffuse essential oils. It’s much more natural, and as you may have just gathered, it saves plenty of money as well.

Of course, if you were to step into my house you would probably spot all sorts of other tricks that I try in a bid to keep things smelling as fresh as possible. This guide has hopefully outlined some of the best tips for you though and if you do opt for any of these I can assure you will notice the difference!
