It’s great to get to a point when your kids are old enough to enjoy a birthday party but young enough to leave you to essentially organise the whole thing. There’s nothing quite like that level of freedom and creativity. It’s crucial to use that wisely to ensure you create the best party possible – the party that’s going to be remembered for years to come.
Of course, that can mean it all feels massively daunting, and you might even get overwhelmed by it all, which takes away from the fun you should be experiencing. To stop that from happening, it’s important to think about things well ahead of time, and to make sure you include all these factors into your planning. Which factors? Read on to find out more.

Choose The Right Theme
You don’t have to have a theme for a kid’s party, but if you do have one, it makes everything else much easier. You can narrow down your options so you’ll only have a few items to choose from if you want to stick to that theme.
A well-chosen theme can really set the tone for the whole party and make things a lot more fun for the kids and a lot easier to plan for you, so it’s a win-win no matter how you look at it. Plus, coming up with a theme is pretty easy – just think about what your child’s main interests are and choose something they’re going to love. It could be superheroes, ponies, space, dinosaurs, dance, or perhaps a favourite TV show or character. With a theme in place, you can move on to the rest of the planning.
The Guest List
Working out the guest list is a crucial part of any kid’s party because the number of guests dictates where you can hold the party, what the budget is going to be, how much food you’ll need to prepare, what size cake to make or buy and, of course, how many birthday invites to order.
The key is to invite enough children to make the party fun, but not so many that it all becomes unruly. You don’t want it to be difficult to manage or even stop being fun for everyone. This can be a really tough thing to get right, and you’ll need to make sure you invite your child’s best friends without upsetting those you don’t have room for. However, once it’s done, you’ll know exactly what you’ve got to work with, and that’s going to help enormously.
Food and Drinks
The food at a kid’s party needs to be fun, tasty, and easy to eat – remember, as much as you might plan for everyone to sit down and eat at one time, it’s highly likely some little ones will be having too much fun, and they’ll want to take their food ‘to go’. It’s just not a good idea to serve up plates of food like you would at dinner; it’s much better to create a buffet. Serve up plates of finger food to give everyone the fun element they want and make sure they all eat something, which is what the adults need.
