Being a good homemaker means you make everything from scratch, right? Yeah right. If we are able to get through the day with all limbs intact, bellies full and dirty bodies bathed, I count it a good day.
IF we are able to squeeze in some (fun) DIY-ing, I count it a great day! The kids and I love making and using our own soaps, mixes, paints… all kinds of stuff!!
Yesterday I was considering doing laundry. However, we were out of soap. That, of course, was a sign that laundry just wasn’t meant to be. I can’t keep that thought process forever because then we would eventually run out of clothes and have to run around in burlap coffee bags. I don’t think that would go over well. So, in the interest of saving people from seeing me in a burlap bag, we made some soap…

Grate up the soap.
The littles love to help with this part. 🙂
Once grated, it will look like little curls. These need to be ground up a bit.

that I use just for soaps. Three quick bursts is usually enough to get the right consistency.

This is what you’re going for… still a little course.
This fine powder is what happens when you let a three year old grind the soap on his own.
Pour your soda, Borax and ground bar of soap into a baggie.
And shake it up!
*make sure the baggie is closed before shaking… don’t ask me how I learned that lesson.
And there we have it. I use two Tablespoons per load in my high-efficiency front-loading washer. I have been using it for months without problem. 🙂

Nice! I have a year’s supply of Purex, but I always think that “someday” I’d like to try making my own.
does it matter what type of soap you use? I’ve never seen or heard of fels-naptha soap before.
